Roads in Puerto Rico are generally of a good standard, with excellent American-style freeways connecting the majority of the island. Roads in more out of the way places, however, are likely to be of a poorer standard. Bus services operate in all towns across the island, and offer a cheap way around, though crowded and unreliable. Taxis are widespread and are much better than buses for travelling long distances between towns on the island. Passenger rail services stopped operating many years ago, but there are still remnants to be seen as tourist attractions. There are around 20 airports in Puerto Rico and regular internal services fly between a lot of them – flights can also be chartered. Passenger and car ferries operate regularly, including government run services to certain islands. This method provides a relaxing, scenic and affordable way of getting around.
